ENGLAND RESEARCH TRIP: October 5

England, Oct. 5:

I’m tired, but happy! I only slept a couple hours on the overnight flight, but I’m “settled in Settle” now.

I unpacked, then did some shopping for essentials, and had a cuppa tea in the window seat overlooking my tiny “secret garden.”

Then I strolled around the village, and hiked to the next small village nearby. It is so GREEN here! I love the dry stone walls all over the countryside; it’s been so wet here that many of them are clothed in moss two inches thick.

I can tell I’m going to sleep great tonight!

    Hi Kristi,
It sure looks and sounds like your research adventure will be a huge success! I am curious how you came to find such a cute place to stay? It looks adorable! My daughter and I would like to plan a trip to England and that place looks absolutely divine as a place to hang ones hat for a bit! Please enjoy every single day!

    • It is truly adorable. The secret for finding such a good price is going in the off-season. HUGE difference. I just found it by Googling “self-catered cottage in Yorkshire Dales.” Dozens of choices came up. But I wanted to be in this village. The village is small, but I had about a dozen to choose from. I wanted one in easy walking distance from the market and trails and museum especially.

I’m ease dropper when coming to this story. Kristi Holl it seems as many of your friends like to follow in your foot steps. I think that’s great. Thank’s for sharing ! 🙂

    • I’m glad if you and others are enjoying this writer’s journey abroad! I was an “arm chair traveler” for fifty-plus years before I got to take a trip of my dreams. (Luckily, I dream of economical travel!) But I would look at other writers’ pictures as they traveled to do research in some wonderful place, and I would think, “Someday, that’s what I’m going to do.” But in the meantime, I could dream and look at other people’s travel photos. Where there is a will, there is a way. (I took on another part-time job for several months in order to finance this trip. Was it worth it? You bet!)

    Kristi,
Thank you so much for sharing this journey with your readers. It is exactly what I want to do and it gives me courage to do so, even though I will be traveling alone.

    • Good for you! Even though it was scary the first few times I traveled alone, I have thoroughly enjoyed it this time. Every time I travel with someone, I always end up doing all the planning and arranging where to stay and how to get there, and what sites to see, and saving money for the trip, making reservations for anything special to do, etc. So when I decided to come alone, I already had the experience of doing all the planning before. It’s like anything else in life–the more you do it, the less it is scary at all. This time just feels like pure adventure. And, selfishly, this time I am getting to see everything I want to see and dawdle in museums just as long as I like! 🙂
